Château Pavie

Classification: Premier Grand Cru Classé A (First Growth)

pavie_2.jpgChâteau Pavie is one of the oldest and largest of the Saint Emilion châteaux with its vineyards dating back to Roman times. It takes its name from the orchards of peaches ("pavies") that used to stand there. The modern estate was assembled by Ferdinand Bouffard in the late 19th century and a portion of the estate went to comprise Château Pavie Decesse and Pavie Macquin. Château Pavie lies along the hillside côtes of St. Emilion, south east of the town, neighbouring Châteaux Ausone and La Gaffelière.

Between 1967 and 1998, Château Pavie was owned and run by Jean-Paul Valette, who formerly operated a ranch in Chile. In 1998 Château Pavie was purchased by Gerard Perse who also owns Châteaux Pavie Decasse, Monbusquet , Bellevue Mondotte, Saint Colombe, Clos Les Lunelles and Clos L'Eglise. Perse invested heavily in Pavie pavie_copy.jpgand today his wines are a different style to those from the Valette era, being more intense and are highly prized by both wine connoisseurs and critics.

The vineyards of Château Pavie cover 91 acres and lie on a mix of soils from chalky limestone and deep clay at the top of the south facing slopes to gravels and sands further down. The grapes planted are 55% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon.

Wine Style
The wines of Château Pavie are rich, fruit driven and concentrated with notes of ripe blackberries, black cherries, spice, pepper, blossom and earth. They are a glossy deep crimson and are well structured and elegant. The wines are smooth and round with well integrated tannins. They age well and should be cellared for at least 10 years.
