Château Grand Puy Lacoste
Classification: Fifth Growth (5ème Cru)
Château Grand Puy Lacoste began life in the Middle Ages as a larger estate incorporating Château Grand Puy Ducasse which was subsequently divided. The Château takes its name from the Pauillac word for a hill or mound “Puy” and dates back as early as 1743 when it was known to be surrounded by a few rows of vines. Château Grand Puy Lacoste is only a couple of miles west from the town of Pauillac and it's vineyards neighbour Château Batailley and Lynch Moussas.
The Château was once owned by Raymond Dupin, one of Bordeaux's greatest gourmets. In 1978 Dupin sold the Château to Jean Eugene Borie, owner of Château Ducru Beaucaillou. The Château has been run since then by Jean Eugene's son Xavier. Xavier began a remodelling program which completely modernized the ancient and dilapidated cellars and the wines of Grand Puy Lacoste regularly out perform their peers.
The vineyards of Château Grand Puy Lacoste cover 124 acres and lie on deep ridges of gravel with a limestone base. The grapes planted are 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot.
