Château La Lagune

Classification: Third Growth (3ème Cru Classé)
la_lagune_copy.jpgChâteau La Lagune lies in the commune of Ludon, 10 miles north of the city of Bordeaux. Although it is classified as a Third Growth there are many who consider La Lagune's wines to be that of a Second as the quality is so high. The château, once known as Château Seguineau – after the 17th century owners – is thought to be named after a nearby lagoon. The Seguineau family constructed the chartreuse style château in 1715 and the château adopted the name of La Lagune in 1958 when it was purchased by Georges Brunet. Brunet, an agricultural engineer, expanded and redeveloped the château and this work was continued when the château was sold in 1961 to the Champagne House Ayala. In 1964 Madame Boyrie became the first woman manager and cellar master in Bordeaux, when she was appointed to la_lagune_2_copy.jpgrun the wine making at the château.

Today the estate is in the ownership of the Frey family, who acquired Champagne Ayala in 2000, subsequently selling the Champagne house to Bollinger in order to fund their acquisition of the Rhône négociant firm Jaboulet.

The vineyards of Château La Lagune cover 173 acres and lie on the Ludon crest of fine Mindelian gravel. La Lagune is the only classified growth to be planted on this type of soil. These sands and gravels are similar to the terroir of Graves and the grapes planted at La Lagune have an unusually high percentage of Petit Verdot. The grapes grown are 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 10% Petit Verdot.

Wine Style
The wines of Château La Lagune are rich and powerful with a rather masculine appeal. They are markedly oaky and have notes of spice, toffee, vanilla and ripe fleshy dark fruits. The wines are velvety smooth and well rounded with great ageing potential.
