Chateau Bellevue Mondotte

Classification: Grand Cru
bellevue_mondotte_2_copy.jpgChateau Bellevue Mondotte is a tiny property producing garagiste wines which was bought in 2001 by Gérard Perse, owner of Châteaux Pavie, Pavie Decesse, Monbusquet, Clos Les Lunelles, Clos L'Eglise and Saint Colombe.   Bellevue Mondotte's vineyards are only 5 acres but lie on exceptional terroir south east of the town of Saint Emilion, neighbouring Château Pavie Decesse. Perse, an ex cyclist, sold his supermarkets to enter into the wine making business and is driven by quality and perfection. He has invested millions into his quest and has caused a renaissance in the chateaux under his care.

The vineyards sit on the Saint Emilion clay and limestone plateau, overlooking the Dordogne valley from a height of 80 metres, on south facing slopes. The average age of the vines is 45 years old and the grapes grown are 90% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine is aged in 100% bellevue_mondotte_3_copy.jpgnew oak, the first 6 months on its lees, and bottled unfined and unfiltered after 24 months of aging. There are only 4,500 bottles of the wine made.

Wine Style
The wines of Bellevue Mondotte are opulent, rich and powerful with notes of ink, black cherries, violets, truffles, chocolate and wood. They are full bodied, velvety and concentrated. The wines are approachable when young but have great ageing potential and should be cellared.

Owner: Gérard Perse (also owns Châteaux Pavie, Pavie Decesse, Monbusquet, Clos Les Lunelles, Clos L'Eglise and Saint Colombe)
