faugeres.bmpChâteau Cap de Faugères is from the Château Faugères estate and is hailed as one of the up and coming wines from Bordeaux, wine critics have claimed that it is the beginning of a legend. The 140 acre Faugères estate straddles two appellations in the region, with half its vineyards in Saint Emilion and half in Côtes de Castillon. The estate produces 3 reds: Château Cap de Faugères, which carries the Côtes de Castillon appellation; and Château Faugères (A Saint Emilion Grand Cru and the limited production Château Péby-Faugères, which are from Saint Emilion.

faugeres_1.bmpChâteau Faugères is situated 4 miles east of the village of Saint Emilion. The château dates back to the 1500s when there was a hunting lodge on the estate. The Château is a Chartreuse style Carthusian Monastery built in 1790. In 1823 the family of Pierre-Bernard (Péby) Guisez acquired the château and their descendants Péby Guisez (the French film producer) and his wife Corinne took over the estate in 1987. They are responsible for the dynamic rise in the fortunes of the château and the superb quality of its wines. Sadly Péby Guisez died suddenly at the age of 52 and Corinne poured her energies into their dream of raising Château Faugères to the ranks of a Saint Emilion Grand Cru. Silvio Denz, a wine connoisseur and businessman purchased the château in 2005 with the aim of further enhancing the capabilities of the wines over the coming years.

The vineyards of Château Faugères lie high on the sunny slopes of the River Dordogne and Château Cap de Faugères lies in the pretty village of Saint Colombe. Being adjacent to Saint Emilion the vineyards share the same soil of clay limestones and a soft molasse rock subsoil. Michel Roland and Count Von Neipperg, the owner of Château Canon la Gaffelière are the consultant oenoligists.

Wine Style
Being made with a high proportion of Merlot the wines of Château Cap de Faugères are a luscious velvet style. The wines are full bodied, aromatic and concentrated with blackcurrant, spice, chocolate and floral notes. They are deeply coloured, well balanced and complex. They age well but can be enjoyed young.
