Château Chasse Spleen
Classification: Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel
Château Chasse Spleen is one of the leading Moulis estates and is held in high esteem – being ranked as high as many Third Growths by some critics. The château's name means to “chase the blues away” and hails from a literary background – Lord Byron visited the château in 1822 and was so entranced by the vineyards that he remarked “Quel remède pour chasser le spleen”. It is also thought to have been inspired Baudelaire's poem “Spleen” after he had visited the property.
Château Chasse Spleen dates back to 1560 when it was part of the estate of Grand Poujeaux. Grand Poujeaux was divided in 1822 and today Chasse Spleen is owned by Claire Villars. The vineyards of Chasse Spleen lie near Arcins, to the south of the gravelly hill of Grand Poujeaux. The soils are mostly Garonne gravels and chalky clay which lie on a chalk substratum. The grapes grown are 73% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 7% Petit Verdot.
Wine Style
The wines of Château Chasse Spleen are charming, full bodied, fruit driven and rich. They have good depth and concentration with notes of blackberries, cherries, plums, charcoal, liquorice and violets. They are very long lived wines and continue to develop after 20 years or more but are also very approachable when young.
