Château Gazin

Classification: Grand Cru 
Château Gazin has been estimated among the great growths of Pomerol since the 1840s. The present day Château Gazin  is on the site of a hospital built by the Knights of St John of Jerusalem, Rhodes and Malta which hosted the pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostella in the 12^th century. The vineyards sprang up around it in the 12th century. The estate became the property of the Bailliencourt dit Courcols family in 1918, who are still in residence and are 5^th generation wine makers. The Bailliencourt dit Courcols belong to one of the oldest families in the Artois region in Northern France and the nickname "Courcol" (short neck) was given to one of them by Philippe Auguste, king of France, in 1214, for a feat of arms in the battle of Bouvines. Since then it has become the family motto : "by courage a Courcol".

Château Gazin sits at the heart of its 64 acre single plot of vineyards on the great gravel plateau of Pomerol, neighbouring Châteaux Pétrus and l'Evangile. The grapes grown on the clay and gravel soils are 90% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Cabernet Franc.

Wine Style
The wines of Château Gazin are silky, intense purple wines full of dark berry fruits and with hints of mint, plum, chocolate, coffee and liquorice. They have aromas of almond, toast, tobacco and vanilla. Maturity gives them a nose of spices, truffles, undergrowth and the gamey scents of fur and leather. The wines can be drunk young but also age well and are at their best after 10 - 15 years or more.
