Château L'Evangile

Classification: Grand Cru
levangile.jpgChâteau L'Evangile lies on the eastern outskirts on the plateau of Pomerol neighbouring Vieux Château Certan and Châteaux Petrus and La Conseillante near the border with Saint Emilion and Château Cheval Blanc. Evangile is considered to be one of the great Pomerol estates. The chateau dates back to the 1700s when it was founded by the Libourne family Léglise but was known as Fazilleau. It gained its current name in the mid 1880s.

In 1862, Château L'Evangile was purchased by Paul Chaperon, whose descendants, the Ducasse family, would remain the property’s owners until 1990. In the second edition of Cocks Féret in 1868, L’Evangile is registered and is considered as a “Upper Pomerol 1st growth wine”. In 1990, Domaines Barons de Rothschild acquired L’Evangile from the Ducasse family. They invested in Château L'Evangile, restoring the vineyards and renovating the chais to further improve the chateau's status as a top performer.evangile_2.jpg

The vineyards of Château L'Evangile cover 35 acres and are plated with 78% Merlot and 22% Cabernet Franc. The soils are 2 different types - clay soils common to the plateau of Pomerol and also areas of gravel ore typical of the Graves region.

Wine Style
Château L'Evangile's wines are intense, a deep purple colour and are known for their fineese and elegance. They also have one of the best aging potentials of all the chateaux of Pomerol. These wines are usually quite tannic in their youth and need a minimum of 5-7 years before opening. The best years will improve for 20 years or more if properly stored. They are aromatic and have notes of minerals, violets, raspberries, liquorice and truffles.
